I have posted a new hike on my website: Gilbert Gaul Trail
Born in 1855, Gilbert Gaul was an important late 19th and early 20th century military and historical painter and illustrator. He provided numerous illustrations to Century Magazine at a time when it was publishing Civil War memoirs. In 1882, his painting entitled Holding the Line at All Hazards was awarded the gold medal by the American Art Association.
In 1881, Gaul inherited a tract of land where Fall Creek Falls State Park is now located. He built a studio and used local inhabitants as models for his paintings and illustrations. The Gilbert Gaul Trail passes by the site of his former studio.
In 1910, he returned to his birthplace of Ridgefield, New Jersey, and died December 21, 1919.
